It all started here
Back in 1978 I was introduced to cb radio. I was 11 years old,my friends father had a cb radio along with a few of his friends. I use to sit and listen for hours and enjoyed it very much. For my 11th birthday my mother bought me my first ever cb and antenna. It did not take long before it seemed like everyone in the street had or wanted a cb. I still think a lot of the amateurs started there hobby by first using cb radio. We use to have some very good nights on the radio with networks running and people joining from all over the north east for a good ragchew. It was not long before the Idiots came alive with the mic keying swearing and abusing some very nice people. Anyway cb radio is now all but gone in the north east and I think it is all down to the Idiots. So when CB started to go down hill I switched to receivers and scanners and listened to a lot of shortwave and various other interesting things such as the amateur bands. I was very pleased with what I was listening to on my first old receiver and piece of wet wire. I eventually invested in a shortwave type longwire and could not believe what I could here, stations from all over the world were coming in and I was impressed I started to log callsign prefixes so I could find out which country they were transmitting from. I was alway's wanting to have a go at the radio amateur exam but could not find the time due to shift work and other things and the course being so long. Well in febuary 2002 a friend of mine told me about the foundation class licence and a club that was running the course over two sunday's in march 2002. So four of us applied for the course done some study work and pleased to say we all passed and are now into a very interesting hobby. Well that's about it really.
I do enjoy the 480 very much using the Heil Handi Mic supplied with radio.I operate phone most time when on during daytime and mostly data on a night.
I like to work radio in my spare time I like bpsk31 sstv and of course phone ssb.
